Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, using the dollar, with Spanish and English both official. It is far larger than most of its neighbours: a mountainous interior, a rainforest under federal protection, three bioluminescent bays, and in Old San Juan the oldest European-founded settlement under the US flag.

Known for Old San Juan, El Yunque rainforest, bioluminescent bays, salsa and bomba and Arecibo.

Highlights

  • Old San Juan, San Juan: The walled colonial core founded in 1521, with blue cobblestones, the Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristobal guarding the harbour entrance.
  • El Yunque National Forest, Rio Grande: The only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest system, rising to over 1,000 metres with waterfalls, coqui frogs and near-daily rain.
  • Mosquito Bay, Vieques: A bioluminescent bay on Vieques, among the brightest recorded anywhere, where dinoflagellates light the water when it is disturbed.

Getting around

San Juan's public transport is run by the Autoridad de Transporte Integrado: the Tren Urbano light rail, sixteen stations open 5:30am to 11:30pm every day of the year, and thirty-two AMA bus routes. The standard bus fare is US$0.75, with two express routes at US$2.00. An ATI card carries you from the train onto a connecting bus free within two hours. Ferries from Ceiba to Vieques and Culebra cost US$2.00 to US$2.25 for an adult.
