Getting around British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands are joined by ferry. Scheduled boats link Road Town on Tortola with Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda, West End with Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke, and Tortola with Anegada by way of Virgin Gorda, run by operators including Speedy's, Smith's Ferry Service, Road Town Fast Ferry and New Horizon. Road Town's jetty handles the local boats, and the Ports Authority terminal at Soper's Hole in West End takes most of the traffic to and from the US Virgin Islands. Taxi and livery fares are set and monitored by the Taxi and Livery Commission.
How it works
Ferries between the islands
Road Town to Spanish Town runs several times a day on weekdays; West End to Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke runs daily; Anegada is reached from Road Town by way of Virgin Gorda on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The two terminals
The Road Town jetty, in the middle of the capital, is used mainly by local ferries. Soper's Hole at West End is the Ports Authority's main terminal for traffic to and from the US Virgin Islands.
Regulated taxi fares
The Taxi and Livery Commission licenses the vehicles, inspects them and establishes the fare structure, so a fare is set rather than negotiated.
