Puerto Rico beaches for swimming and a seaside day
Four beaches around Puerto Rico offer swimming, from calm sheltered bays to a lively west-coast shore.
These beaches pair places to swim with features for spending time by the sea, including food kiosks, snorkelling and public facilities. Water conditions vary: some bays are sheltered, while currents can pick up at Crash Boat Beach in winter.
Balneario La Monserrate (Luquillo Beach)
Beach, Luquillo
Luquillo’s long, palm-fringed public beach has usually calm water, lifeguards, bathhouses, food kiosks and chair rentals. Its Mar Sin Barreras area helps wheelchair users get into the sea.
Crash Boat Beach
Beach, Aguadilla
At this lively Aguadilla beach, snorkellers can explore around the colourful old pier, and vendors sell snacks and rent gear. Currents can pick up in winter, so swimmers should stay aware.
Flamenco Beach (Playa Flamenco)
Beach, Culebra
Culebra’s sheltered, mile-long bay has gentle shallows for swimming and good snorkelling right off the sand. Kiosks sell food and drinks, and a camping area behind the beach has bathrooms and showers.
Sun Bay Beach (Balneario Sun Bay)
Beach, Vieques
This two-mile crescent near Esperanza has a lifeguarded swimming area, bathrooms, showers and a snack bar, making it an easy choice for a day at the beach on Vieques.
