Getting around Guyana

Georgetown and the coast run on privately owned minibuses working numbered zones. The fare structure is set by government, and every operator is required by law to display it inside the bus. The Transport and Harbours Department runs the stelling ferries, including Parika to Supenaam, bookable through its FerryPass portal. The Demerara Harbour Bridge is a toll crossing: $40 for a motorcycle, $200 for a private car and up to $700 for a large bus or lorry.

How it works

Minibus zones

Minibuses run numbered zones out of Georgetown, among them zones 31, 32 and 40 to 48. Fares are set by government and must be displayed inside every bus, so ask to see them.

Ferries and stellings

The Transport and Harbours Department runs the river ferries and takes bookings through FerryPass. The loading bridge takes vehicles up to fifteen tonnes.

Harbour Bridge tolls

Crossing the Demerara Harbour Bridge costs $40 for a motorcycle, $200 for a private car or pick-up, and up to $700 for a large bus or lorry.
