Getting around Dominica

Dominica's public transport is entirely private: minibuses with number plates starting H link Roseau and Portsmouth to the villages, leaving when they fill rather than to a timetable. They run most reliably Monday to Saturday, 6am to 7pm, and fares run from EC$2.00 to EC$12.00 with distance. Two companies sail to Guadeloupe and Martinique from Roseau and Portsmouth. Traffic keeps to the left, and a visitor's driving permit costs about US$12.

How it works

Minibuses with H plates

A number plate beginning with H marks a public minibus. They leave when full rather than on the hour, and run most reliably Monday to Saturday, 6am to 7pm.

What a ride costs

Fares run from EC$2.00 to EC$12.00, roughly US$0.74 to US$4.41, depending on how far you are going.

Ferries to the French islands

L'Express des Îles sails from Roseau to Guadeloupe and Martinique, and Val Ferry from Portsmouth to Martinique and Guadeloupe by way of Marie-Galante. A port passenger fee of EC$12.50 applies, or EC$7.50 for frequent travellers.

Driving here

Traffic keeps to the left. A visitor's driving permit costs about US$12, and drivers must be between 25 and 65 with two years' experience.
