Anguilla: Culture, history and things to do
Explore Anguilla’s Amerindian carvings, plantation-era architecture, historic harbour village and local traditions.
Anguilla’s heritage ranges from Amerindian rock carvings to the remains of its salt-trading past. These places also offer ways to experience the island today, including heritage tours, community events and live music.
Big Spring Heritage Site
Parks & Nature, Island Harbour
Near Island Harbour, a walkway gives visitors a view of more than one hundred Amerindian petroglyphs in a collapsed limestone cave. The Anguilla National Trust leads tours, which must be booked at least 48 hours ahead.
East End Pond Conservation Area
Parks & Nature, East End
This protected salt pond in East End is a birdwatching site cared for by the Anguilla National Trust, which also includes it on heritage tours.
Sandy Ground Village
Things to do, Sandy Ground
Sandy Ground’s harbour and old salt pond recall the island’s salt trade, which lasted for some three centuries. The village’s fishing and boat-building traditions continue, and Johnno’s Beach Stop hosts Sunday afternoon live jazz.
Scilly Cay
Food & Drink, Island Harbour
A family-run restaurant on a tiny islet in Island Harbour, Scilly Cay serves charcoal-grilled seafood and chicken under thatched shelters, often with a live band. A free boat crosses from the village dock.
Wallblake House
Things to do, The Valley
Built in 1787, Wallblake House is Anguilla’s only surviving plantation house. Its restored estate retains the kitchen complex, stables and workers’ quarters, and it hosts art shows and community events; tours can be arranged in advance.
