Wreck of the RMS Rhone

Things to do · Salt Island, British Virgin Islands

The Royal Mail steamer Rhone sank off Salt Island in the great hurricane of 1867 and now rests in clear water as the British Virgin Islands' most celebrated dive site. The surrounding seabed was declared a national marine park in 1980, and the coral-encrusted bow section remains remarkably intact, sheltering eels, lobsters and shoals of reef fish. Dive operators across the islands run regular trips, and snorkellers can glimpse the shallower stern section from the surface.
