Temple in the Sea

Things to do · Trinidad, Trinidad and Tobago

A white-domed Hindu mandir stands on a causeway in the Gulf of Paria at Waterloo, the legacy of Sewdass Sadhu, an indentured labourer who spent decades building a temple in the sea after being barred from building on land. Rebuilt in 1995 for the 150th anniversary of Indian arrival, it remains an active place of worship where prayer flags flutter over the tidal flats. Sunset visits are especially atmospheric, with scarlet ibis sometimes feeding nearby.
