La Brea Pitch Lake
Parks & Nature · Trinidad, Trinidad and Tobago
The world's largest natural deposit of asphalt spreads across roughly 100 acres at La Brea in southwest Trinidad, a slowly stirring surface of pitch that has been mined for road surfaces around the world. Official guides walk visitors safely across the springy surface, pointing out warm sulphur pools and the odd prehistoric find the lake has surrendered. A small museum at the site tells its geological and historical story.
