Sint Maarten

Sint Maarten is the Dutch half of the island it shares with French Saint Martin, and a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is the busier and more developed side, built around Philipsburg, a cruise port and an airport whose approach passes directly over a beach.

Known for Maho Beach approach, Philipsburg boardwalk, the shared island, cruise port and Great Salt Pond.

Highlights

  • Maho Beach, Lower Prince's Quarter: A short beach at the end of the Princess Juliana Airport runway, where arriving aircraft cross the road at very low altitude.

Getting around

Privately run minibuses work the corridors between Philipsburg, Simpson Bay and Maho, frequently but to no published timetable, and the fares are low. Taxis run on government fixed rates rather than meters, so agree the fare before you set off; dispatchers are stationed at the A.C. Wathey cruise harbour, at Captain Hodge Square in Philipsburg and at Princess Juliana airport. On the buses, children under four and people over 65 travel free, and four to twelve pay half.
