Fort Zeelandia
Things to do · Paramaribo, Suriname
A riverside fortress at the heart of Paramaribo's UNESCO-listed historic centre, begun by the French in 1640 and given its Dutch name in 1667. Its brick bastions now house the Surinaams Museum, whose collections trace the country's colonial, cultural and archaeological history. The surrounding lawns and riverfront promenade make it a natural starting point for exploring the old town.
