Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam Open-Air Museum
Things to do · Commewijne, Suriname
An eighteenth-century pentagonal fortress guarding the point where the Commewijne River joins the Suriname River. Built between 1734 and 1747 and later used as a prison, its grounds are now an open-air museum with cannons, historic buildings, a moored lightvessel and shady riverside walks. It pairs naturally with a cycle tour of the old plantation villages along the Commewijne bank.
