A huge open lagoon and mangrove wetland east of Nieuw Nickerie, part of a 68,000-hectare protected area on the young coastal plain. Boat trips glide between fishing stilts and mangrove islands to watch scarlet ibis flocks return to roost at dusk, alongside herons, egrets and caimans. A handful of simple stilt lodges let birdwatchers stay out on the water overnight.
