Suriname beaches and swimming spots

A practical look at Suriname’s river and creek swimming spots, plus Atlantic beaches shaped by turtle conservation.

Suriname’s swimming spots are mostly rivers and creeks rather than the open sea. White Beach has a marked river swimming area, and Colakreek offers a swim in a creek. The Atlantic beaches are mainly noted for turtle nesting and carefully managed visits.

  1. White Beach

    Beach, Wanica

This river recreation spot has a broad artificial sand beach, palm shade and a calm swimming area marked off by safety nets. Bars, a restaurant and overnight cabins make it suited to a day out.

  2. Colakreek

    Beach, Para

Sandy banks, swimming spots, picnic huts and water slides make this a day-trip destination. Its tea-dark water is in a creek, not the sea.

  3. Braamspunt

    Beach, Commewijne

This quiet shell-and-sand beach sits on a sand spit at the Atlantic, reached by boat. It is an important turtle nesting ground, and guided visits are timed to avoid disturbing the animals.

  4. Galibi Nature Reserve

    Beach, Marowijne

These remote Atlantic beaches near the Marowijne River are reached by boat from Albina. Visits during turtle nesting season are under strict local supervision, and travellers often combine them with a stay in nearby villages.
