Plymouth Buried City

Things to do · Saint Anthony Parish, Montserrat

Montserrat's former capital lies buried in ash and hardened volcanic mud from the Soufrière Hills eruptions — the only town in the Americas entombed by a volcano, often called the Caribbean's Pompeii. Rooftops and the shells of churches and public buildings still rise from the grey ground. Plymouth sits inside exclusion Zone V, where public access is normally prohibited: entry is possible only on an authorised tour with a certified local guide when volcanic conditions permit, so most visitors take in the ruins from Garibaldi Hill or from a boat along the coast.
