National Museum of Montserrat

Montserrat: Culture, history and volcano stories

Explore Montserrat’s heritage, musical connections and volcanic past through museums, gardens, viewpoints and sites shaped by the Soufrière Hills eruptions.

Montserrat’s story spans early settlement, plantation-era history, music and the volcanic crisis that transformed the island. These stops bring that history into view, from museum exhibits to landscapes around the affected southern zone; access to Plymouth is restricted and depends on authorised tours and volcanic conditions.

  1. National Museum of Montserrat

Things to do, Saint Peter Parish

At Little Bay, this compact museum traces the island’s story from its earliest Amerindian settlers through the plantation era, volcanic crisis and rebuilding. Its exhibits include artefacts, photographs and playable instruments connected to Montserrat’s musical heritage.

  2. Montserrat National Trust Botanical Gardens

Things to do, Saint Peter Parish

The National Trust headquarters combines botanical and medicinal-plant gardens with an orchid house, history centre and library. It is also a place to ask staff about trails and Trust-run heritage sites around the island.

  3. Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Things to do, Saint Peter Parish

This scientific station has monitored the Soufrière Hills volcano since the eruption began. A self-guided weekday visit includes interactive exhibits, a documentary and an observation deck overlooking the volcano and Belham Valley.

  4. Plymouth Buried City

Things to do, Saint Anthony Parish

Rooftops and the remains of churches and public buildings still rise from the ash and hardened mud covering Plymouth, Montserrat’s former capital. The city is in exclusion Zone V, so visits are possible only on authorised tours with a certified local guide when conditions permit.

  5. Soufrière Hills Volcano

Parks & Nature, Saint Anthony Parish

The Soufrière Hills volcano reshaped Montserrat, and its eruptions beginning in 1995 buried Plymouth. Visitors can view it from the observatory, Jack Boy Hill or Garibaldi Hill, or from west-coast boat tours; the summit area is off limits.

  6. Jack Boy Hill

Things to do, Saint Georges Parish

This landscaped viewpoint looks across to the Soufrière Hills volcano and the buried remains of the old W.H. Bramble Airport. Seating, picnic spots and an on-site telescope offer a place to take in the eruption’s aftermath from outside the exclusion zone.

  7. Olveston House

    Accommodation, Saint Peter Parish

Olveston House connects Montserrat to the island’s 1980s recording scene: it was the Caribbean home of Beatles producer Sir George Martin, whose AIR Studios drew recording artists to the island. The guesthouse is set in tropical gardens with views towards the Belham Valley and volcano.

  8. Runaway Ghaut

Parks & Nature, Saint Peter Parish

A short trail leads from the roadside into a forested ravine and to the freshwater spring known as Runaway Ghaut. Local legend says that drinking its water means you are destined to return to Montserrat.
