Things to do · Saint-Pierre, Martinique

A clifftop museum in Saint-Pierre telling the story of the May 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée, which wiped out the town in minutes. Founded in 1933 by American volcanologist Frank Perret and fully reimagined in 2019, it displays heat-twisted relics, survivor accounts and photographs of the vanished 'Paris of the Caribbean', with a terrace overlooking the bay. The town's ruins, including the old theatre and the cell of survivor Cyparis, are a short walk away.
