Things to do · Fort-de-France, Martinique

One of the Caribbean's most photographed buildings: an exuberant iron, glass and tile library designed by Pierre-Henri Picq, first erected in Paris and then shipped in pieces to Fort-de-France in the 1890s. Its facade mixes Byzantine, Egyptian and Art Nouveau flourishes, and it still works as a public library holding the collection donated by abolitionist Victor Schœlcher. It faces La Savane park in the heart of the capital, making it an easy stop on a city walk.
