Culture, history and activities in the Cayman Islands
Explore Caymanian history and heritage through a national museum, a historic great house, turtle conservation, a distillery tour and a guided cave walk.
These Grand Cayman stops connect island history with hands-on ways to explore it. Visit a museum and a restored historic house, then add a turtle conservation park or a distillery tour for a different view of Caymanian heritage.
Cayman Islands National Museum
Things to do, George Town
The national museum explores the islands’ natural history and culture, including reef and cave ecology, catboats, turtling and seafaring. It is housed in the Old Courts Building, one of Cayman’s oldest surviving public structures.
Pedro St. James National Historic Site
Things to do, Savannah
This restored great house, built around 1780, is remembered as the birthplace of democracy in the islands: the decision to form an elected assembly was taken here in 1831. Period-furnished rooms, gardens and a theatre presentation bring that history into focus.
Cayman Turtle Centre
Things to do, West Bay
Learn about green sea turtle conservation at this government-run park, which has worked with turtles since 1968. Exhibits also explore the islands’ long seafaring relationship with the turtle.
Cayman Spirits Co. Distillery
Food & Drink, George Town
A distillery tour passes copper stills and explains the underwater ageing of Seven Fathoms rum, followed by a guided tasting. The George Town business has made small-batch spirits since 2008.
Cayman Crystal Caves
Parks & Nature, North Side
Guided walks take visitors through three limestone caves and the tropical forest between them. Along the way, guides point out stalactites, stalagmites, roosting bats and strangler figs.
