Citadelle Laferrière
Things to do · Hispaniola, Haiti
Perched on the Bonnet à l'Évêque mountaintop south of Cap-Haïtien, this early-nineteenth-century fortress is the largest in the Americas and the centrepiece of Haiti's UNESCO-listed National History Park. Built after independence under King Henry Christophe, its 40-metre walls still hold rows of captured cannons and stacks of cannonballs. Visitors climb or ride horses up from Milot to walk the ramparts, explore the cannon-lined galleries and take in sweeping views over the northern mountains and coastline.
