Stabroek Market
Things to do · Demerara-Mahaica, Guyana
Georgetown's great cast-iron market hall was prefabricated in Delaware and assembled on the Demerara riverside in 1880-81, and its red four-faced clock tower has been the symbol of the city ever since. Under the vast roof, stalls sell everything from fresh produce and fish to gold jewellery and household goods, in a scene that is loud, colourful and completely Guyanese. Go in daylight hours, keep your wits about you and enjoy one of the region's classic markets.
