Fort Zeelandia and the Dutch Heritage Museum
Things to do · Essequibo Islands-West Demerara, Guyana
A short boat ride into the Essequibo delta lands you on Fort Island, where the Dutch built this lozenge-shaped brick fort in the 1740s to guard their Essequibo colony. Nearby stands the Court of Policy hall, one of Guyana's oldest buildings, now a small museum of Dutch colonial artefacts, maps and archaeology. Together they make an atmospheric half-day trip from Parika into the country's earliest colonial history.
