Guyana's beaches and lakeside swimming spots
A calm freshwater lake, a broad Atlantic beach and a remote shell-covered coast show three different ways to spend time by Guyana's waters.
These three places offer distinct beach experiences, from freshwater swimming on the Essequibo Coast to Atlantic shoreline in Berbice and the far northwest. Shell Beach is remote and protected, known for sea turtle nesting rather than a resort-style day out.
Lake Mainstay Resort
Beach, Pomeroon-Supenaam
Mainstay Lake pairs pale sand with a swimming area, water sports and a restaurant. Its calm freshwater makes it a gentler alternative to the Atlantic coast.
Number 63 Beach
Beach, East Berbice-Corentyne
This broad Atlantic beach has firm brown sand at low tide, with room for walks, cricket and kite flying. On weekends, families bring picnics and vendors sell snacks nearby.
Shell Beach
Beach, Barima-Waini
This remote, protected stretch of Atlantic coast has sand made largely of crushed seashells. It is especially known for sea turtles nesting at night between roughly March and August, watched over by community rangers.
