Ciudad Colonial de Santo Domingo

Things to do · Distrito Nacional, Dominican Republic

The first permanent European city in the Americas, laid out beside the Ozama River in the late 1490s and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its grid of shaded streets holds the hemisphere's first cathedral, early hospital ruins and the Calle de las Damas, the oldest paved street in the New World. Today it is a lived-in neighbourhood of plazas, museums and cafes that rewards slow wandering.
