The Dominican Republic's national shrine, a bold 1971 modernist basilica in Higüey whose arched tower rises high over the eastern plains. It holds the venerated 16th-century image of the Virgin of Altagracia, patroness of the Dominican people, and every January 21 pilgrims arrive from across the country for her feast. The stained glass and vast open nave impress even outside pilgrimage season.
