Altos de Chavón
Things to do · La Romana, Dominican Republic
A meticulously built recreation of a 16th-century Mediterranean hill village, completed in 1982 on a bluff high above the Chavón River. Cobbled lanes lead past artisan studios, a design school, an archaeological museum and the stone church of St. Stanislaus to a 5,000-seat amphitheater that still stages major concerts. Entry is managed through Casa de Campo, so day visitors typically come on a booked excursion or resort pass; the river viewpoint remains one of the country's signature panoramas.
