Lamanai, 'submerged crocodile' in Yucatec Maya, was occupied for some three thousand years and is usually reached by a wildlife-rich boat ride up the New River from Orange Walk Town. The jungle-wrapped High Temple, Mask Temple and Jaguar Temple sit beside the lagoon, and howler monkeys often provide the soundtrack. Ruins of two colonial-era Spanish churches and a small museum round out the visit.
