The closest major Maya site to Belize City, Altun Ha is best known as the place where the famous jade head of the sun god Kinich Ahau was unearthed, an image now printed on Belizean banknotes. Two grassy plazas are ringed by climbable temples, including the Temple of the Masonry Altars, and a small visitor centre explains the finds. Its easy access makes it a favourite for families and cruise visitors.
