Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave

Known simply as the ATM Cave, this river cave near San Ignacio was a sacred Maya ceremonial site, and its chambers still hold ancient pottery and calcified skeletal remains, including the famous 'Crystal Maiden'. Reaching them means wading and swimming through the cave with a licensed guide and headlamp, which makes the visit a genuine adventure. Access is strictly by guided tour to protect the artifacts.
