Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary
Parks & Nature · Bonaire — southern salt pans, Caribbean Netherlands
The saltpans at Bonaire's southern tip hold one of the Caribbean's very few flamingo breeding grounds, a sanctuary listed as a Ramsar wetland since 1980 and home to thousands of birds. The sanctuary itself is closed to people so the flamingos can nest undisturbed, but the coastal road runs right past the pink-tinged pans and gleaming white salt pyramids, and the birds are easily watched from the roadside with binoculars.
