The island's capital wraps around a deep, yacht-filled harbour and still carries the name of a Swedish king from the century when Sweden ruled the island. Red-roofed colonial buildings, stone warehouses, small churches and museum sites line streets that mix history with cafes and boutiques. It is compact enough to explore entirely on foot, with fort ruins on the surrounding hillocks offering views over the anchorage.
